Reed Strengths, FAQ's and General Comment

(The following is adapted from an article for Reeds Direct Cambridge)

I hope that this page and some of the FAQ’s that follow will help you to gain confidence in making the choice of reed, finding the right strength and assisting in the search for reeds.

First things first –


If you are new to playing, or buying for someone who is, softer reeds, often strength 1.5 or 2 are your best bet. Using lower strength reeds at first is more encouraging to the younger player, easier on the lip and less demanding for air support. You may also wish to purchase less expensive reeds at first, as without careful handling they can be easily broken. As players learn to better handle their reeds then the expense of higher quality reeds can be justified as they will last longer and be more enjoyable to play. As a player learns to blow better, learns more notes and expects more from the tone of their instrument then they should be encouraged to move up in strength of reed and experiment with what different brands have to offer. Manufacturers offer strengths usually starting from 1.5 (or even 1) and extending to 5 (or more). These numbers represent an increasing strength of resistance. Most players will settle on strength 2.5 or 3 after a number of years of playing – this is very standard, though some advanced players or those with particular mouthpieces will require both higher and softer strengths than this. Teachers can help decide the appropriate time to change strengths.


One practice that will definitely help to keep your reeds in use for longer is to rotate them from one practice session to another. Keeping 3 to 4 reeds going at all times will allow each reed to recover from use and will highlight when one reed is beginning to lose its quality in relation to the others. We recommend purchasing cane reeds by the box and working in new reeds as old ones need replacing.


FAQ’s


  • What is the difference between different make of reeds?
Each manufacture tries to offer a unique cut and quality of cane in their product. As these factors are crucial to sound and response the player will find reasons in time to prefer one make over another. 
  • How do I know when to try a harder /softer strength?
When sound suffers beyond what the player can adjust for is the time to examine the strength being used. If upper register notes are thin and unstable a harder strength may help. If low notes cannot be produced in spite of one’s best efforts then a softer reed may help. The ideal is an comfortable control and even response throughout the range with a gratifying musical sound. 
  • Why are reeds difference sizes for different instruments?
 As each size of instrument uses a specific size of mouthpiece the reed used must fit. Reeds are an integral part of the production of the sound through the vibration they provide to the air column and must be designed specifically for the mouthpieces. 
  • What makes a reed a ‘Jazz’ reed, what makes a reed a ‘Classical’ reed?
 In general, a ‘Jazz’ will be a slightly more flexible and vibrant reed intended to allow higher overtones to be present in the sound – producing a so called ‘brilliant/punchy’ quality often associated with jazz music. A ‘Classical’ reed will be more resistant and is intended to produce a greater concentration of lower overtones in the sound – the so called ‘dark/rich’ quality associated with symphonic or classical music.
  • Why are some reeds more expensive than others?
 Cane is selected by manufacturers for the intended product market – the highest of selection criteria means that fewer canes are suitable, more wastage occurs and more care is taken in finishing – contributing to higher cost. 
  • Why are some reeds less expensive than others?
Some lesser expensive reeds are made from lower qualities of cane, cut more simply with less concern for final finishing. These can be well suited to players at any level but are often associated with initial years learning. 
  • What are some reed brands more popular than others?
 Some products have been around for a century or more – ample time to become well known and respected. Some are more widely available therefore easier to recommend by teachers and some have a proven track record for specific mouthpieces and/or types of use. Successful products have a following in different regions around the world so what is well known in one country may be very differently regarded elsewhere. 
  • Why have I been recommended to a particular brand of reed when there are so many different brands available? 
Perhaps because a player or teacher has had a very good experiences themselves with a product, perhaps a name has been well established and is easily available or perhaps because a certain brand is believed to constitute good value. In the end every player will want to find their own best answer and should sample a variety of reeds. 
  • Why don’t all reeds correspond in strength? 
 This is a bit like ‘Why don’t all cars look alike?’ They just don’t and for a variety of reasons. Strength guides are generally relative and roughly proportional to each other but each manufacturer wishes to do something unique to meet the perceived requirements of the musician. Experience of different reeds will lead someone to a personal understanding of the relationships between brands and strengths – in the meantime a strength comparison chart and some background reading will help to fill the gaps in knowledge.

Why Play the Cor Anglais?

Why Play the Cor Anglais?


I imagine that almost any oboist who has had experience playing or owning a cor anglais will be inclined to answer quickly simply and immediately - because it is fun! I fully share and support this opinion - but it does not say enough about the benefits to the oboist so I hope to expand a little. I would say that experience of playing and better yet owning, playing and treasuring your own cor anglais deserves to be viewed as an important part of the development and maturation of every oboist.

The similarities between oboe and cor are many and following a predictable initial shock and the requisite alteration of habits and expectations transferred from the oboe the cor is largely playable by most oboists of a reasonable standard. The primary differences one will at first encounter are the relatively larger size and weight of the instrument, the stretch fingers and placement of keywork and the blowing position as the cor does rely upon a bent crook.

The size and weight are best addressed by using a sling, a fairly standard practice for the cor, to take the weight and relax the hands. The finger stretch and placement do take some getting used to however, since the demands for speed of finger action are considerably lower for most of the cor repertoire, there is usually time and opportunity to learn to ease the fingers into place to cover holes correctly and gently.  Allow the instrument to hang down between the legs so that the reed on the crook enters your mouth at approximately the same angle as you have with your oboe reed. Transferring some of these skills back to the oboe is often beneficial in itself and may eventually result in a more fluid technique on your main instrument.

Oboists often discover that the cor uses up a greater amount of air than the oboe. This is true and logical if you consider the larger size bore. Learning how to breathe more deeply and how to best hold onto the greater reservoir of air required is a very useful learning process and the discipline and awareness that one learns are sure to enhance breathing and phrasing on the oboe as well.

The Cor Anglias is almost entirely a solo voice in the orchestra or ensemble and as such when it is included in a score it is intended to be heard - almost never a 'filler'. This implies that tone and projection are very important concerns for the player. Mastering the production of a fine, centred, colourful tone with good projection takes time and more than anything replies upon learing to relax the embouchure so as to not 'stifle' the sound with the same embouchure pressure as one uses on the oboe. In addition the aural cavity should be adjusted to 'shape' the air to optimise the resulting tone colour by giving 'space' for the air within the body before filling the reed/crook/instrument. Getting used to hearing oneself instead of feeling 'buried' within an ensemble texture can be a bit nerve wracking to be sure but it also can be a wonderful confidence boost!

Balancing the tonal qualities of different ranges of the cor requires careful listening and the cultivation of new sensitivities. The skills gained through this process are likely to benefit the oboe as well. Learning to produce and then employ vibrato is ofter easier to do at first on the Cor Anglais as it is a more flexible instrument and a wider amplitude of vibrato and a slower speed can be acceptable. Vibrato skills learned on the cor can later be transferred to the more precise demands of the oboe.

Even if one does not make their own cor reeds learing how to handle and adjust a different size of reed can be very useful. Most players will play a less resistant reed on their cor than their oboe and learing to 'take pressure off the lips and place emphasis upon the air' will not only make for a better cor sound and more accurate intonation but can be applied to the oboe often with great benefit.

Learning to switch between, care for and maintain your instrument is also very beneficial as it is often the case (even likely) that your oboe and cor will have been made by different manufacturers and the key mechanisms and even the specification (covered hole, ring system, thoumbplate, conservatoire system, half hole split keys, LH F, trill keys, 3rd octave key, etc.) will be different. Coping with this is a fact of life for many players and it should make you a more flexible individual capable of understanding all your equipment better.

I would recommend splitting your practice time between the different instruments on a regular basis. Playing scales, arpeggios, interval studies and long tones on the cor is time well spent. When the much smaller, lighter and more facile oboe is picked up it is almost certain to feel amazing by contrast.

A final point I would add is that the ability to play the cor, and the ownership of or access to an instrument, can often be the 'ticket' to opportunities to perform with a wider range of ensembles and even result in participation in groups where just being to provide the oboe would not be of interest.

I would encourage all oboists to embrace whatever opportunities they get to play the Cor Anglais. Make sure any instrument you might use is in good condition by having it checked over by a repairer and then go away and do the necessary 'familiarisation' practice. When you feel that you are ready then go out and let everyone know that you have added cor to your skill set. You will be glad you did!

Tonal Differences Between Makes of Flutes


Tonal Differences Between Makes of Intermediate 

and Professional Flutes




While there are a myriad of makes and models sharing similar specifications and much confusion regarding their quality of performance it is possible to make some useful observations on the differences, both intentional and anecdotal, between different flutes. These might help interested players to find the type of instrument most likely to suit their playing expectations.



Manufacturers of popular and well respected ‘Step-Up’ or Intermediate levels include:



Altus, Azumi, Pearl, Trevor James and Yamaha

Manufacturers of highly respected ‘Top Range’ or Professional levels include:


Miyazawa, Muramatsu, Sankyo and Yamaha


While there are many additional makes, some of which are excellent, for the purposes of this blog entry I will concentrate on these well respected names.



Of the above makes flutes from Altus, Azumi, Miyazawa, Sankyo and Trevor James all tend to have brighter tone colours and are more immediately responsive. This is due to the concepts underlying the design of the embouchure hole and the cut of the lip plate / chimney as well as the metal composition, the weight and dimensions of the walls of the headjoint and body tube. These flutes will tend to be attractive to and suit well the player who wishes a fine result for little effort.



Flutes from Muramatsu, Pearl and Yamaha tend to have darker or ‘richer’ tone colours and it is often remarked that a player has to ‘work a bit harder’ to draw out the sound. While this might potentially be viewed as an negative observation the result of the willingness of the player to support and direct the airstream with a bit energy is that the tone achieved is likely to have more carrying power and projection with a richer and fuller spectrum of harmonic colours in the sound. The ‘core’ of the sound will be better perceived.



Further:

Azumi and Altus flutes are closely related – Azumi flutes are supplied with an Altus cut headjoint – and perform similarly – the Altus being the entirely ‘Made in Japan’ instrument. Miyazawa instruments are highly responsive, wonderfully engineered and innovative with Brogger system keywork options (making the key action more stable and reliable as well as beautiful) and various body tube metal silver contents from which to choose. Sankyo and Muramatsu have long established reputations and offer features and characteristics quite different from one another. When comparing these two brands one can clearly see that though each flute may have a silver headjoint or a silver body tube and headjoint, the shared specification does most certainly not mean that they will perform the same. At the highest end of flute production it is individual craftsmanship that often sets instruments apart as well as their ability to convey a ‘musical personality’ to the user.


Flutes supplied in yet greater higher silver content specifications than the above (including solid silver keywork and additional precious metals) as well as further possible keywork options are available and the differences will be noticed by experienced players but the perceived benefits tend to diminish and tend to be more difficult to quantify as the costs increase. If one is looking at the purchase of a professional 'tool' for solo or orchestral playing or wishes to simply be rewarded by owning the 'best money can buy' then these finer points are perhaps worth the additional expenditure and will certainly contribute to the enjoyment of any instrument.

Differences Between Student, Intermediate 

& Professional Models





In common usage these terms are becoming less relevant with the passage of time – other than a still useful way to differentiate between the costs of the ranges of instruments. The quality of student instruments has, on the whole, risen significantly while the number of true ‘intermediate’ models has declined and in the meantime the number of highly competitive models claiming to be of professional standard has increased.



As a rule in general, the best ‘made for purpose’ models still aim to achieve the following:



Student – Lighter weight, often designed to be more responsive and encouraging for young players frequently offering beginner specific keywork designs, simplified key mechanisms, quality starter mouthpieces/headjoints and supplied with durable yet convenient cases many with shoulder carry or rucksack straps.



Intermediate – Heavier built than student models and using better materials to enhance tonal quality and reward the progress that has been made in the early years of playing. Slight increases in resistance to match the player’s growing capabilities, often more fully keyed, sometimes accompanied by better quality mouthpieces and frequently supplied as outfits with more sophisticated cases that will stand up to longer periods of use.



Professional – Here you will find the highest degree of intonation accuracy, even heavier built and weighted to make the most well developed of airstreams and still hold sound together. Top quality materials are used, more hand finishing employed and the highest level of quality control, more design input from professional players and development teams, the fullest range of keywork and other options. A wider range of finishes is often available including custom looks. Greater responsiveness and tonal evenness are a priority and projection is emphasised – all with the intention of aiding the player to better produce a more personal sound and to meet the requirements of a wide range of playing circumstances while allowing the greatest freedom of expression and reliability.



It is worth noting that the quality of the mouthpieces supplied with intermediate and professional level clarinets,  saxophones and many brass instruments are often not equal to the standard of the instrument as manufacturers expect most players to have upgraded to their own choice of mouthpiece by the time they come to choosing a professional standard instrument. Some notable exceptions to this are Selmer, Yanagisawa, Holton, Conn, Bach, Paxman and Yamaha Custom each of whom includes a quality mouthpiece with their outfits.



NB – Sadly there are some very poor quality instruments, especially in the student range and often generic or ‘shop branded’ that are simply best avoided. Often compromises to the materials used, quality control and design will have been compromised  and performance will be sacrificed. When considering the purchase if a musical instrument I would always suggest seeking advice from an experienced, knowledgeable player and visiting a specialist shop who can offer the support and guidance necessary to make you feel comfortable making your choice.

The Buffet Clarinet Range - a 2016 Overview

Introduction


The Buffet (Paris) Company has a grand tradition of making woodwind instruments dating back to 1825 and in its French factory in Mantes-la-Ville since 1850. The firm has earned a worldwide recognition for fine clarinets and they have developed a range of instrument options to suit the preferences and requirements of virtually any player - from beginner to the finest professional musicians. As the Buffet range is now quite vast I thought that a short summary of the differences, as I and many customers have found them, would be useful for anyone contemplating a purchase or just interested in a more thorough understanding of these fine instruments. I do not propose an engineering review full of specifications and key work listings or a detailed history of manufacturing - the Buffet website (www.buffet-crampon.com) or this encyclopaedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffet_Crampon) can provide such information. Rather, I would like to pass on my observations and my understanding of the intended performance characteristics and the nature of the different Buffet models while highlighting some of the subtle differences between them.

The Student Range


B12 - This model has been very popular ever since its introduction and it remains the industry standard student clarinet and for good reasons. The ABS resin body is lightweight and the tone holes are comfortable to cover for all but the smallest of fingers. The tone is resonant and sound is easily produced to be encouraging for the younger, often primary school aged beginner. Silver plated key work, fish skin pads and a wood-look finish are nice touches that link the B12 to the rest of the Buffet range.

B10 - This model has a more recent history and was introduced primarily as a production cost savings over the student B12. It has no metal bell or body rings and the key work is less refined than the B12 and it is nickel-plated. The B10 is however durable, uses synthetic pads and is easy to maintain. For longer-term satisfaction I prefer the B12.

E11 - The first wooden clarinet in the current range the E11 has a more interesting sound than the plastic bodied models and its greater weight makes is more satisfying both to hold and to blow for an improving player. The key work is nickel-plated and traditional bladder pads are used. It is manufactured in Germany. I consider this a budget value wooden instrument. The E11 has had a good reception on the Continent where it often recommended as a first clarinet for learners.

The Intermediate Range


E12F - This model is a new collaboration (first released 2012) between the French factory where the wooden body (derived from professional models) is produced and the German production facility in Markneukirchen where key work assembly takes place. This hybrid model offers exceptional performance at its price point. Some cost saving choices have been made including the lack of a bell rim ring and the use of stained and stabilised wood however good quality leather pads are used and the resonance is noticeably improved over the student range models.

E13 - For over 40 years this model has been the most often recommended of all intermediate clarinets and a great product for Buffet. Recent innovations including leather pads, a new bell (based on the RC professional bell), low F regulation screw and choice of case options have only help to confirm the desirability of the E13. It's internal taper - a unique design in the Buffet range - colourful sound, high quality finish and ease of tone production all contribute to making this an exceptional value upgrade clarinet. Manufactured entirely in France.

The Professional Range


R13 - Since its creation in 1955 (by Robert Carre, one of the greatest designers in Buffet history) the Buffet R13 has been the company's flagship professional model. Very popular in the USA for its all round qualities of projection, brilliant tone and flexibility in all idioms the R13 is the standard against which all professional clarinets are judged. It is the first instrument in the Buffet range to be offered at A440 tuning contributing to its popularity in the USA and UK markets.

RC - Robert Carre's innovative polycylindrical bore design and distinctive internal taper were introduced to create additional warmth and tonal centre to the already successful R13 clarinet for this, his namesake, model. These characteristics have made the RC a very popular choice with orchestral and chamber music performers for many decades. It continues to be preferred by many for the roundness and beauty of its tone. Supplied with two barrels for A440 or A442 pitch.

Conservatoire - Less well known in the UK this model is never the less popular on the continent in Europe and is a reliable and respected instrument recommended to many aspiring professionals.

 

The Advanced Professional Prestige Range


R13 Prestige - The performance qualities of the R13 but made from the finest natural, unstained, Blackwood for the best possible resonance and the additional features of metal-capped tenons, left hand Ab/Eb key, superior Gortex pads and a deluxe leather case.

RC Prestige - The performance qualities of the RC but made from the finest natural, unstained, Blackwood for the best possible resonance and the additional features of metal-capped tenons, left hand Ab/Eb key, superior Gortex pads and a deluxe leather case.

Festival Prestige - A distinctive model in the Prestige range the Festival originated from a collaboration of top French clarinettists, Jacques Lancelot, Guy Deplus and Michel Arrignon. It shares all the extra features of the other Prestige models but is supplied with two barrels and a distinctive repositioned register key vent for enhanced response of the upper register and improved focus for the throat Bb. A very popular professional choice on the continent. Supplied with two barrels for A440 or A442 pitch.

Tosca - Another example of recent artistic design collaboration by Buffet with Michel Arrignon the Tosca is an elegant styling based upon the R13 bore clarinet with innovations in keywork including a low F correction key and new design touch pieces. The Tosca has gained many followers since its introduction this Century. Supplied with two barrels for A440 or A442 pitch.

Divine - Designer Paul Meyer bases this most recent introduction to the top professional Buffet range, the Divine, upon the bore of the RC clarinet with acoustic and technical innovations. Uniquely the Divine upper joint incorporates Green Line technology on the lining of several tone holes and carbon wire based key work that helps to reduce weight and allow for greater vibration. The innovation extends to a most elegant glass fibre case as one might expect for this most luxurious of clarinets. Supplied with two barrels for A440 or A442 pitch.

A note on Buffet Greenline technology


The patented Buffet Greenline process is a reconstitution of the Grenadilla wood residue otherwise lost during the process of turning of the clarinet body and the boring of tone holes with a powder (resin like glue) that binds the residue once again into blocks (billets), which are then bored or drilled just like the original wood. However, crucially, these Greenline billets are without a grain and are therefore virtually cracks due to water absorption or temperature fluctuation are virtually impossible making Greenline the ideal material to use in any challenging conditions. Instruments made using this material are slightly heavier than those in natural wood and, as the Greenline material is denser, they have a slightly altered resonance. I believe Greenline material instruments sound more brilliant and slightly less warm than their wooden equivalents.
